Palate Expanders
Orthodontic Expanders for Children
The foundation of a healthy smile starts early. Orthodontic expanders are one of the most effective tools we use to gently guide jaw development and create the space your child needs for a straight, confident smile. Expanders work by gradually widening the upper jaw, allowing adult teeth to come in properly and reducing the likelihood of more complex treatment down the road. When started at the right age the results can make a big difference. Our team will assess your child's growth and development to determine if an expander is the right fit for them, and walk you through every step of the process with care and clarity.
Our Treatment Process
From your child's first visit to their final smile, we make every step simple and stress-free.
Initial Evaluation
We start with a thorough exam, including X-rays and photos, to get a clear picture of your child's jaw width, bite, and overall development. This helps us determine whether a palate expander is the right fit and, if so, the best time to begin.
Communication & Education
We'll walk you through exactly what we found and why a palate expander may be recommended. You'll leave knowing how the appliance works, what to expect during treatment, and how to care for it at home.
Expander Treatment
Once we move forward, your child's expander will be custom fitted and gradually adjusted over time to gently widen the upper jaw. Most children adapt quickly, and our team will be with you throughout the process to answer questions and make any necessary adjustments along the way.
Monitoring & Follow-up
We'll schedule regular check-ins to track your child's progress and ensure the expansion is developing as planned. Once the target width is reached, we'll monitor the jaw as it stabilizes before moving into the next phase of their treatment.
Types of Palate Expanders
Not all expanders are the same. Depending on your child's needs, we may recommend one of the following:
Fixed Palate Expander
This type of expander is attached directly to the upper molars. It stays in place throughout treatment, and small adjustments are made regularly to gradually widen the jaw over time.
Removable Palate Expander
A removable palate expander can be taken out for eating and cleaning. It requires consistent wear to be effective, so it works best for older, motivated children who can follow through with the routine.
Invisalign® Palatal Expander
A newer option in palate expansion, Invisalign® palatal expanders uses a series of clear, custom-fitted trays to gradually widen the upper jaw. It's a comfortable and removable alternative for children that provides effective results under our close guidance.
Rapid Palate Expander (RPE)
As the name suggests, this expander moves a bit faster. It's typically used when more significant widening is needed in a shorter window of time, taking advantage of a child's growth before the palate begins to fuse.
When Is a Palate Expander Recommended?
A palate expander is most effective between the ages of 7 and 14, before the upper jaw fully fuses. Common reasons we recommend one include a narrow upper arch, crowding, crossbite, or difficulty making room for incoming adult teeth.
What Happens After the Expander Comes Out?
Once expansion is complete and the bone has stabilized, we'll move into the next phase of your child's treatment plan, whether that's continued monitoring or beginning orthodontic treatment, like braces or Invisalign®.

Dr. Caro corrected my daughter’s underbite issue with remarkable care and expertise. What’s truly impressive is that she used the right technique at exactly the right time — considering both my daughter’s dental development and emotional readiness — to achieve a permanent correction rather than rushing to fix the problem & not consider the aftermath or future development. Dr. Caro and her team also work closely with our dentist and other health professionals to ensure every step of the process happens at the right time, leading to the best possible outcome at the minimum cost.
